This is a problem that I have been working with that has caused me some grief. I need to know the minnimum diameter of an overflow drain to accomidate the amount of water that is being pumped into the tank.

For example if I am pumping in 1 gallon of water a minute into a tank and the overflow drain is located at the surface of the water, what is the smallest diameter pipe that will accomedate the level of water coming in?

I have run into this problem myself. The best advice that I can give to you is to use a pipe about 1/3 larger pipe to drain the tank than that of the pipe or hose that is feeding into it. I realize that this is crude and will not work if the inlet is under high pressure.

From what I know, a properly set up 1" Durso overflow will drain 600 gallons an hour. I properly set up 1.5" Durso overflow will flow 1200-1300 gph. Search on the word durso to find out more.
